Education Notebook: Mead presents ‘Boys Next Door’

The Mead High School drama department’s production of “The Boys Next Door” premieres 7 p.m. Thursday.

“The Boys Next Door” is a comedy/drama about four young adults with special needs and their burnt-out social worker.

Student research and presentations on the disabilities represented in the play will be displayed before the show starting at 6 p.m. and during intermission.

Other performances are Friday-Saturday and Feb. 25-27 at 7 p.m. at Mead High School, 302 W. Hastings Road. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors; $10 for adults.

Bridge building competition planned

Engineering students from Mead and Mt. Spokane high schools will compete Saturday in the Mead School District Bridge Building Competition.

The Popsicle stick bridges will be judged on bridge efficiency, or the amount of weight the bridge can hold divided by the weight of the bridge.

The competition will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Mt. Spokane High School, 6015 E. Mt. Spokane Park Drive.

Six students win PLU scholarship

Six local students have been awarded the President’s Scholarship from Pacific Lutheran University, which is worth $25,000 a year and is renewable for three more years of undergraduate study.

There were more than 500 applicants, and only 130 incoming freshmen were selected based on their academic achievement, leadership and service. Students also must have earned a 3.8 GPA or higher, an SAT score of 1,250 or higher, critical reading and math only, or an ACT score of 28 or higher.

The Spokane- and Spokane Valley-based President’s Scholars are: May Avent-Arnold, Rogers High School; Kylee Dickinson, University High School; Joshua Jenkins, Central Valley High School; Krista Osborne, Ferris High School; Michaela Sund, East Valley High School; and Nicholas Templeton, Mead High School.

These students will complete an interview later this month to compete for the next level of the scholarships, one of 10 $30,000-per-year Harstad Founder’s Scholarships or one of five full-tuition Regent’s Scholarships.

EV students place in business competition

Twenty-two Future Business Leaders of America students from East Valley High School recently participated in the 2016 Northeast Region Future Business Leaders of America Winter Conference, which was held Feb. 3 at Eastpoint Church in Spokane Valley.

The students competed against nearly 500 others, with 14 students placing in the top six in their respective competitions. These students will compete at the state conference, which will be held in Spokane in April.

The students moving on to the state conference are:

First Place: Sarah Demetrulias, Accounting I; Joe Grassl, Computer Problem-Solving and Networking Concepts; Audry Burgess, Economics; Baylee Buchanan, Audry Burgess and Laurel Weberg, Management Decision-Making and Marketing; Joe Grassl and Matthew Montoya, Network Design.

Second Place: Matthew Montoya, Cybersecurity; Baylee Buchanan, Audry Burgess and Laurel Weberg, Entrepreneurship.

Third Place: Tyler Holt and William Duncan, Entrepreneurship; Sarah Demetrulias, Personal Finance.

Fourth Place: Jaimee Clark, Accounting I; Audry Burgess, Future Business Leader.

Fifth Place: Audry Burgess, FBLA Principles; Baylee Buchanan, Audry Burgess and Laurel Weberg, Global Business; Joe Grassl and Matthew Montoya, Management Information Systems, Annissa Wimer, Client Service.

Sixth Place: Tyler Holt, Connor Weyant and Justin Vigesaa, Sports and Entertainment Management.

Shadle senior wins state CTE award

Shadle Park High School senior Hailey Himelspach has been selected as one of 18 students from Washington state to receive the Washington Career and Technical Education Student Success Award.

Himelspach was nominated because of her academic achievements, technical competence, employability skills, ingenuity and creativity. She has balanced a 3.955 GPA with dance team, cheer squad, DECA, leadership class and a job.

The winners from Washington will represent the state in the U.S. Presidential Scholars award competition. National winners will be announced in June.

NW Christian plans open house

Northwest Christian Schools will hold an open house Thursday for parents interested in learning more about the school’s Christ-centered education.

Informational packets about the application process and applying for financial aid will be available.

Parents with children between 12 months old and fifth grade should meet in the Lower Campus Gym, 5028 E. Bernhill Road, Colbert, to see classroom displays, meet teachers and staff, and learn about NWC’s licensed full- and half-day early learning and kindergarten programs. Parents of students in sixth through eighth grades should also meet in the Lower Campus Gym, where, after a general session, they will visit middle school classes to learn about NWC’s Bible-based academic program and the school’s mission for mentoring middle schoolers, and meet teachers. Prospective high school students and their families will meet in the Colbert Campus Chapel, 5104 E. Bernhill Road, Colbert. Students and parents will learn about how NWC integrates the Bible and encourages critical thinking while mentoring the heart of each student. Families of home-schooled students are also invited to the open house. Information about NWCS’ Homeschool Extension Program, which includes weekly curriculum-based enrichment classes for kindergarten through sixth grade and academic classes with transcripts for seventh through twelfth grades, will be able at both the Lower Campus Gym and the Colbert Campus Chapel.
