Thunderbirds beat Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in overtime

Ethan Bear scored on the first shot in overtime to send the Seattle Thunderbirds past the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in Western Hockey League play Saturday night in Seattle.

Bear also scored the tying goal 13:15 into the third period. Markson Bechtold scored Spokane’s lone goal on a penalty shot while the Chiefs were shorthanded in the second period.

Seattle (32-22-3-0) had a commanding 36-18 shot advantage, but could only get a couple past Spokane goaltender Tyson Verhelst. Verhelst stopped 34 of 36 shots, including 19 of 20 in the third period.

The Chiefs (27-22-5-3) gained a point with the overtime loss but fell to fourth place in the WHL’s U.S. Division. Spokane hosts Tri-City Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena.

The Spokane Braves rode second-period goals by Paxton Malone and Troy Pichette to a 2-1 victory over the Nelson Leafs in Nelson, B.C.

Blake Norman had 20 saves for the Braves (9-38-0-0-4, 22 points).

Kurtis Redding and Austin Breen had assists on Malone’s goal at 15:37 while Pichette’s goal at 13:27 was unassisted.

Kolten Nelson scored for the Leafs (20-29-0-0-2, 42) in the third period.
