Gonzaga splits baseball doubleheader

The Gonzaga baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Grand Canyon Saturday at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix.

The Bulldogs (1-2) won the opener 21-6. They scored six runs in the first inning. GU’s Tyler Frost had three hits and four RBIs and Sam Brown had four hits and three RBIs. The 21 runs were the most the Bulldogs have scored since 2010.

The bats went silent in the second game as GU fell 3-0. Grand Canyon (2-1) starter Jake Repavich pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits and walk while striking out four.

The teams wrap up the four-game set on Sunday.

Texas St. 10, WSU 1: Bobcats starter Jeremy Hallongquist was masterful through seven innings and Texas State (2-0) beat the Cougars (0-2) in the second game of a four-game nonconference series in San Marscos, Texas. Hallongquist allowed just four hits and no walks in seven scoreless innings. Game three is Sunday.

Softball

Whitworth opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Pomona-Pitzer in nonconference play in Claremont, California. The Pirates won the opener 3-0 and claimed the second game 7-3. Whitworth plays a doubleheader against Redlands on Sunday in Redlands, California.
