West Coast men’s basketball: BYU easily handles Pacific
Chase Fischer scored 23 points with six 3-pointers and Kyle Collinsworth added 22 points as the Cougars (10-5 1-1 WCC) defeated the Tigers (3-10, 2-2) 81-67 in Stockton, California.
Fischer has drained nine 3-pointers in a game earlier this season and launched 11 of his 16 field goals Saturday from long range. Zac Seljaas added four treys as the Cougars made 48 percent of 3-point shots (11-23).
Collinsworth converted 12 of 17 free-throw attempts and added five field goals plus dishing eight assists.
Jacob Lampkin led Pacific with 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting. The Tigers rallied to a 41-41 tie on a Ray Bowles basket with 14 minutes left, but he missed the plus one after being fouled on the shot.
BYU roared ahead on a 14-2 run that featured 3s from Fischer and Seljaas and a Nate Austin dunk. Six of BYU’s last 10 baskets were 3s.
Matt Hauser chipped in 10 points for Santa Clara, which bounced back after a 79-77 loss to visiting Gonzaga Dec. 31. Nate Kratch had 14 rebounds and chipped in four points. Feagin and Brownridge combined for 26-of-27 shooting from the line.
Bryce Pressley scored 23 points to lead Portland. Alec Wintering added 16 points.
Wintering made a 3-pointer to give the Pilots their last lead, 61-60 with eight minutes remaining. Santa Clara answered with a 10-3 spurt to take a 70-64 lead. D’Marques Tyson added another 3 to pull the Pilots to 70-67 with three minutes left before the Broncos made 14 of 15 free throws to seal it.
Pepperdine 68, Loyola Marymount 65: Lamond Murray Jr. scored 18 points, including a breakaway dunk in overtime, that helped the Waves (8-6, 1-2) beat the Lions (7-7, 0-3) in Malibu, California.
Murray finished Jeremy Major’s alley-oop to push the Waves to a 65-61 lead with 3:04 left in overtime. From there, Pepperdine made 3 of 6 from the foul line — enough to hold off the Lions, who made two of their last seven shots.
Jett Raines added 17 points, Stacy Davis and Kameron Edwards scored 11 each. Davis also grabbed 15 rebounds.
Loyola Marymount took its only lead at 61-59 on Adom Jacko’s 3-point play with 1:47 left in the second half. The Waves tied 14 seconds later when Jacko committed a goaltending violation on Raines’ attempt.
Both teams missed on their chances to pull ahead in the final minute of regulation.
Jacko had 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and nine rebounds.
Saint Mary’s 76, San Diego 46: Dane Pineau scored 17 points and the Gaels (13-1, 4-0) won their seventh straight, beating the Toreros (5-8, 0-2) in Moraga, California.
Stefan Gonzalez had 12 points, Calvin Hermanson and Jock Landale added 11 each for Saint Mary’s.
The Gaels entered the game as the nation’s top overall field-goal shooting team at 54.0 percent and tied for second in 3-point shooting at 45.0 percent. And they improved both by going 32 of 55 from the field (58.2 percent) and 9 of 13 from 3-point range (69.2 percent).
Saint Mary’s led 34-21 at halftime and 65-33 with 8:20 left. The Gaels outrebounded San Diego 18-9 in the second half and 35-21 overall.
Brett Bailey led San Diego with 12 points and seven rebounds. Duda Sanadze added 11 points.
