Gonzaga’s Georgia Stirton named WCC player of the week

Gonzaga guard Georgia Stirton is the West Coast Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

Stirton led Gonzaga (12-4, 4-0 WCC) to a pair of home wins over San Francisco and Santa Clara. She totaled 25 points on 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) shooting from the field. The senior made three of her four three-point attempts and all four of her free-throws. She added seven rebounds and five assists. The Zags’ point guard turned the ball over just once in both games.

After scoring 12 points against San Francisco, Stirton totaled a game-high 13 points in the win over Santa Clara.

Stirton is averaging 12 points per game in conference play. In the four conference games, she tops the WCC shooting 63.3 percent from the field (19-of-30). Her 62.5 percent (5-for-8) shooting from behind-the-arc is second in the league. Stirton’s also made five of her six free-throws. The Melbourne, Australia native, is dishing out nearly three assists to one turnover as well.

During GU’s current six-game win streak, Stirton is averaging 3.5 assists per game. She’s also shooting 56 percent from the field and has made five three-pointers.

Gonzaga begins a three-game road stretch at Portland Saturday. Tipoff between the Pilots (2-13, 0-4) and GU is scheduled for 2 p.m.
