Prep wrestling: CV, U-Hi remain atop GSL

The University and Central Valley wrestling teams stand atop the Greater Spokane League after the first duals of 2016.

And if things hold to form, the teams will decide the league championship in their annual spirit grudge match later this month.

University (5-0) used wins by Cam Sorensen, Levi Meinsinger and Clayton Fincher to top visiting Shadle Park (4-1) 40-23.

Sorensen got a pin at 145 pounds in 1 minute, 25 seconds; Meinzinger scored an 11-5 decision at 182; and Fincher prevailed 5-1 at 220.

At CV, the Bears (5-0) pulled away from Mt. Spokane (2-2) 47-20. Two of the top matches featured CV’s Beard brothers against Mt. Spokane’s Hoover twins. In a battle of defending state champions at 132, Bryson Beard edged Alec Hoover 3-2. Moments later at 138, Bridger Beard topped Andrew Hoover by the same score. … At Mead, the Panthers (3-2), benefiting from four forfeits, handled Gonzaga Prep (0-5) 55-24. Malachi Thompson got a pin at 195 for the Panthers and Tristan Brooks scored a 12-3 major decision at 145. … At North Central, the Indians (2-3) opened with six straight wins on their way to a 42-33 win over Lewis and Clark (1-4). Clayton Gilliam got a pin in 33 seconds at 113 as NC finished with five pins. … At Rogers, the Pirates (2-2) held off Ferris (0-5) 34-28. Two overtime matches were key in the Pirates’ win. Tanner Snyder edged Phillip McElliott 9-7 at 152 and Reed Johnson slipped past Mason Synoground 3-1 at 195.

Great Northern League

East Valley knocked off defending State 2A champ Clarkston 42-24 at EV. Logan Sundheim scored a 14-0 major decision for EV at 145 and teammate Trey Meyer recorded the fastest pin in 26 seconds. … At Cheney, the Blackhawks topped West Valley 43-30. Freshman JW Merriot, who bumped a weight class to 195, got one of five pins for Cheney. WV also had five pins.
