Is ‘thank you’ extinct?

Have you ever noticed how many retail clerks have a difficult time with two words after your purchase? So they substitute them for “have a good one.” Good one what? Or another popular phrase is “there you go!” Go where? My favorite came from a clerk who said nothing, nada. Just a blank stare.

Why is it so hard to say, “thank you” after completing your purchase? I guess being from the second greatest generation, we expect too much to be like it was in 1960.

But a simple thank you would be OK.
