Whitworth men take top spot in Top 25 poll

Whitworth pulled in 15 of the 25 No. 1 votes in the new D3hoops.com men’s basketball Top 25 and now stands atop the poll as the new No. 1 team in the country.

The Pirates, who are 13-0 after wins last week against. current No. 21 Whitman and Pacific, are followed by Elmhurst, Augustana, Hope and Benedictine in the top five. Elmhurst, which picked up two No. 1 votes, won at home in overtime vs. Augustana last Wednesday. Augustana has five first-place votes, Hope two and Benedictine the other.

Benedictine has a head-to-head win vs. Elmhurst from November and is undefeated on the season. Augustana has a return date at home vs. Elmhurst, but not until Jan. 27. Meanwhile, the Vikings, who were last year’s national runners-up, host new No. 25 North Central on Wednesday night.

Whitworth protects its No. 1 ranking on Friday at Willamette and at George Fox on Saturday.
