Weekend weather: Mountain snow continues to fall

A series of weather systems will continue to bring rain and snow to the region with the mountains seeing a good helping of new snow through the weekend.

Light amounts of snow are possible in Spokane from Thursday night through Saturday morning, when the snow changes over to rain.

Coeur d’Alene may see snow through Saturday before milder air changes precipitation to rain on Sunday.

A short break is possible Thursday, with partly sunny skies in Spokane and mostly cloudy skies in Coeur d’Alene.

Then, a new low pressure system is due across the Northwest late Thursday into Friday. It is likely headed into Oregon, leaving northern areas of the Inland Northwest on the light side of any precipitation.

The next big system is due across the region on Saturday and Sunday and could bring moderate rain or snow to lower elevations as milder air moves in from the southwest.

Coeur d’Alene might see 1 to 3 inches of snow on Saturday, but Spokane should see snow change to rain after 10 a.m. on Saturday.

High temperatures across lower elevations should be in the lower to middle 30s until Sunday, when the high is expected to reach the lower 40s. Lows should be in the upper 20s on Thursday night, going to the 30s for lows on Friday through Sunday nights.

In the mountains, more snowfall was expected overnight on Wednesday, with Lookout Pass possibly seeing 4 to 7 inches by Thursday morning.

Mountain snowfall should ease off until Saturday, when 2 to 5 inches of new snow are in the forecast. More is likely on Sunday and Monday.

High temperatures in the mountains should run in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

The most recent storm on Tuesday and Wednesday dropped 8 inches of new snow at the ski lodge at Mount Spokane. That coincided with the ski area’s Powder Wednesday reopening for the week.

Silver Mountain Resort had 6 new inches of snow, while Schweitzer Mountain Resort had 9 inches. 49 Degrees North had 5 new inches.

Spokane International Airport had nearly a half inch of rain in the same period.
