The Dirt: Remodeling of Mobius’ new location to begin

Treva Lind

A $1.1 million remodeling project is expected to start next month for Mobius Science Center’s new location at 331 N. Post St.

Last year, Avista Corp. offered a $1-per-year lease to the museum for space within a historic brick building next to its Post Street Substation. The site is expected to be a permanent home for Mobius, which temporarily has some displays at the main Spokane Public Library.

Avista spent about $550,000 to clean up and prepare the street-level floor of its building for Mobius, so that the museum can proceed with its remodeling. Mobius CEO Phil Lindsey said the nonprofit plans its work to start in February to upgrade about 8,000 square feet of space for an anticipated opening by early June.

Lydig Construction, of Spokane Valley, is Mobius’ contractor.

Upgrades include construction of a reception area, restroom and support spaces. Lindsey said most exhibits formerly at its original site, 809 W. Main Ave., will go to the new location, and three attractions will be new. They include a chemistry-bio lab using donated Washington State University equipment; a tinkering space workshop with light tools, materials and electronics; and a small 3-D theater with about 35 seats to show science movies.

The Mobius Children’s Museum in the lower level of River Park Square is not affected by the science center’s move.
