WCC roundup: Pilots pull off upset of Cougars

Alec Wintering scored 22 points, including two free throws with 16 seconds left, and Portland beat visiting BYU 84-81 on Saturday, two nights after the Cougars won at No. 25 Gonzaga for the second straight season.

Jarrel Marshall’s dunk gave Portland a 73-70 lead and he added two free throws one minute later for a five-point advantage.

D’Marques Tyson sank a deep 3-pointer for an 80-74 lead but Nate Austin answered with a putback. After Portland went 1 of 2 from the line, Nick Emery grabbed a loose ball in the lane, dribbled back to the corner and hit a 3-pointer to cut BYU’s deficit to 81-79. Wintering sealed it at the line.

Bryce Pressley and D’Marques Tyson added 21 points apiece for Portland (9-11, 3-4 West Coast), which improved to 2-12 in the all-time series with BYU.

Chase Fischer scored 22 points, his 11th 20-plus game this season, for BYU (13-6, 4-2). Emery added 13 points and set the BYU freshman record with 45 3-pointers.

Pepperdine 98, San Francisco 84: Lamond Murray Jr. scored 29 points and hauled in nine rebounds to lead the Waves to a road win over the Dons.

Jeremy Major added 20 points, Stacy Davis had 12, Jett Raines 11 and Amadi Udenyi 10 for Pepperdine (11-7, 4-3), which shot 54 percent from the field and was 10 of 18 from long range. Murray sank four 3-pointers and was 10 for 19 from the field.

The Waves never trailed, scoring 20 of the game’s first 25 points and carried a 51-28 advantage into the break.

A pair of free throws from Murray early in the second half marked the largest lead of the game, 61-30. Pepperdine finished with its highest score of the season and snapped a six-game losing streak on San Francisco’s home court.

Ronnie Boyce III led the Dons (9-9, 3-5) with 25 points and Devin Watson added 20.

Loyola Marymount 76, Santa Clara 66: Brandon Brown had 22 points and nine assists and the Lions beat the host Broncos.

David Humphries added 14 points and Adom Jacko scored 12 for the Lions (9-9, 2-5), who won their second straight after opening the conference season losing five straight.

Loyola Marymount pulled away with a 9-1 run in the middle of the second half capped by Brown’s jumper at 60-46. Brown finished two points off his season high.

Humphries made 4 of 6 from 3-point range – two of them back-to-back – to give the Lions the lead for good late in the first half.

Jared Brownridge had 17 of his 20 points in the second half for the Broncos (7-13, 3-5). Kai Healy added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Loyola Marymount outrebounded Santa Clara 38-23 and had 21 second-chance points to the Broncos’ three.

Pacific 88, Bethesda 30: Alec Kobre scored 15 points and the Tigers routed the Flames in a nonconference game in Stockton, California.

Pacific roared out of the blocks in the first half to score 48 points while holding the Flames to just 14. The second half was more of the same.

Ilias Theodorou scored 10 points off the bench for Pacific (4-12). The Tigers used 14 players in the contest and all 14 scored. Pacific shot 57.4 percent from the field (35 of 61), including 12 of 22 from long range. The Tigers collected 26 assists.

No one reached double-figure scoring for the Flames, who shot 22.6 percent from the field (12 of 53), including 1 of 14 from distance. The Flames committed 22 turnovers in the game.
