Salute to Holy Names Sisters

Regarding “Catholic Charities acquiring convent for low-income housing (Jan. 13)”: It is so typical of these women, who spent their lives giving to others, to continue giving, even though they are in need themselves. So proud of them, so grateful for having been taught by them, and so inspired by the work they continue to do despite the challenges of age and lack of financial resources. What greater gift, indeed.

It broke my heart, as a former student, when the sisters had to move from their much loved home. Many of them, who had lived “in community” all their adult lives, relocated to a senior living facility, my own sister among them. Not only did these amazing women accept the circumstances, they set out to bring the kindness and compassion that is their hallmark to their new and diverse community of fellow seniors.

The Holy Names Sisters are a beacon of all that is good in this world, a reminder that as dear and important as place may be to us, there is no more important place than the one we carry in our hearts, the one they taught so many of us to find. I salute them, and I thank them for all they are to us.
