Big Sky roundup: Grizzlies edge rival Bobcats

Walter Wright scored 24 points, and Michael Oguine added 21 as Montana beat Montana State 80-72 on Saturday night in Bozeman, Montana, for the 11th straight victory against its cross-state rival.

Martin Breunig added 14 points for the Grizzlies (13-7, 8-1 Big Sky Conference).

Marcus Colbert had 21 points and Tyler Hall added 17 to lead Montana State (9-12, 4-5).

Sarp Gobeloglu made a 3-pointer to give the Bobcats their last lead, 64-63 with 5:30 remaining. Bobby Moorehead answered with a 3 and Oguine added a layup and the Grizzlies led 68-65. Colbert made two free throws and Wright made a layup to keep it a 3-point game. Colbert and Quinton Everett then missed potential game-tying 3s on the next possession.

Breunig made a layup and Oguine hit a 3-pointer to stretch the Grizzlies’ lead to 75-69 with 49 seconds left. Wright made four free throws and Breunig added one more to seal it.

Idaho State 88, Northern Arizona 66: Geno Luzcando had a career-high 30 points with nearly perfect shooting and the Bengals pulled away in the second half to beat the Lumberjacks in Pocatello, Idaho.

Luzcando was 10 of 10 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 from the foul line.

Idaho State (10-10, 5-3) used a 16-1 run to pull from a 48-all tie early in the second to a 64-49 lead with 11:22 left. The Bengals went unchallenged from there, matching its largest lead at the final score.

Ethan Telfair added 21 points, five rebounds and eight assists, and Erik Nakken scored 15. Idaho State shot 12 of 23 from 3-point range and 55.1 percent overall.

Mike Green made 5 of 13 from 3-point range to lead Northern Arizona (3-17, 1-8) with 22 points. Kris Yanku added 16 and Torry Johnson scored 10.

Weber State 77, Southern Utah 50: Ryan Richardson scored 17 points, Joel Bolomboy had 12 points and 16 rebounds, and the Wildcats roughed up the Thunderbirds in Ogden, Utah.

Bolomboy is second in the nation with 13.3 rebounds per game and notched his 19th double-double in 21 games for Weber State (15-6, 7-1). He’s tied with New Mexico State’s Pascal Siakam for the most double-doubles in college basketball.

Richardson made 4 of 5 3-pointers and 5 of 7 overall.

Southern Utah (4-15, 2-7) started 3 of 15 from the field and finished the first half shooting 25 percent and trailing 45-16. The Thunderbirds tied a season low with three 3-pointers made.

Weber State has won two in a row after suffering its first conference loss to Idaho State in a 69-68 buzzer-beating defeat last Saturday.

Northern Colorado 71, North Dakota 70: Jordan Davis scored 17 points, and his game-winning jumper with 18 seconds left boosted the Bears past the Fighting Hawks in Greeley, Colorado.

North Dakota’s Quinton Hooker missed a jumper with a second left. Drick Bernstine’s basket gave the Fighting Hawks their last lead at 70-69 lead with 34 seconds to play.

Bernstine hit back-to-back jumpers to put North Dakota up 63-59. After a Northern Colorado timeout, Anthony Johnson made two free throws and Davis hit a layup to tie it.

Johnson and Davis scored 11 of Northern Colorado’s last 12 points. Johnson also finished with 17 points for Northern Colorado (8-13, 5-4).

Meanwhile, Bernstine and Hooker scored North Dakota’s final 13 points.

North Dakota (10-10, 5-4) got 21 from Bernstine who shot 10 for 14 from the field. Hooker had 12.

Both teams each made 26 field goals and 13 free throws.
