Oregon governor pushes for stronger gun laws

By Kristena Hansen Associated Press

PORTLAND – Gov. Kate Brown is launching a series of gun-control efforts in Oregon and urging national bans on assault weapons and stronger state gun laws in the wake of recent mass shootings across the country.

The Democratic governor unveiled the effort in Portland Friday alongside Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici plus several local gun-control advocates and religious leaders.

Brown called on state lawmakers to close loopholes in gun laws, such as the so-called Charleston Loophole under which a firearm sale must be approved if authorities can’t determine a person’s eligibility within three days, and ban future purchases of extended-capacity magazines in Oregon.

She’s also ordering Oregon State Police to keep a five-year record of state firearm transactions, which state law already authorizes, and to proactively notify local authorities when someone tries to buy a gun who is prohibited from doing so.
