7 Nights Out: A look at what’s on deck this week

1. Julyamsh 2016

The Pacific Northwest’s largest outdoor powwow. The cultural celebration will bring scores of vendors, including food and beverage, arts and crafts and memorabilia. Fairgrounds facilities include 83 acres of camping, a spacious arena, staging areas and plenty of facilities for horses. As many as 800 dancers and 60 drum groups have taken part in Julyamsh, representing U.S. tribes and Canadian bands from across the continent.

When: Events begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. 2. Dead & Company

Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir; singer/guitarist John Mayer; Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge; and “Fare Thee Well” and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti will perform two sets of music drawing from the Grateful Dead’s historic catalog of songs.

3. “American Experience: The Boys of ’36”

Free advanced screening of this one-hour documentary inspired by Daniel James Brown’s book “The Boys in the Boat” about the American Olympic rowing team that triumphed against all odds in Nazi Germany in 1936. These nine young men were sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers of the Northwest. Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the miracle crew’s triumph. Meet and greet with Spokane River Rowing club members, rowers and representatives from Gonzaga University, and Olympians Jamie Redman (2012 London and four-year National World Champion) and Jerry Johnson (Tokyo 1964 and three-year Olympic assistant coach).

4. “Oliver!”

Winner of three Tony awards, the classic family musical based upon the novel, Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. “Oliver!” sweeps its audience from pity to disgust, loneliness to hope, disappointment to fear, and finally, justice to joy. Young Oliver’s character remains faithful, rewarding him with a touching end to his journey. Presented by Spokane Valley Summer Theatre.

When: Thursday through Aug. 7; showtimes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and Aug. 3-6, and 2 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 7

5. Nick Swardson

Swardson has written or co-written the films “Malibu’s Most Wanted,” “Grandma’s Boy” and “Benchwarmers.” He also appeared in “That’s My Boy,” “Blades of Glory,” “30 Minutes or Less” and “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star,” which he wrote, acted in and produced.

6. Robert Ellis

7. Dan Cummins

The comedian has made numerous television appearances on “The Tonight Show”; Showtime’s “Live from Amsterdam”; a one-hour Comedy Central special, “Crazy With a Capital F”; “Last Comic Standing” and Nickelodeon’s “Mom’s Night Out.”
