Area roundup: Pitching helps local teams win at state legion tournaments

Area teams continued their strong play Sunday at the American Legion State tournaments with some stellar pitching on the second day of pool play.

Tyler Staley doubled twice and Stuart Flesland earned the win in relief as Mt. Spokane (2-0) topped Peninsula 3-2 at Burlington in the State AA tournament at Burlington.

Joshua Grimes tossed a complete game four-hitter, Jeffrey Young homered and Gonzaga Prep (2-0) used an eight-run sixth to beat Bellingham Post in Mount Vernon.

McKabe Cottrell took a shutout into the seventh inning, Jared Smith and Cory Wagner scored on an error, and the Spokane Cannons (2-0) edged Hanford 2-1 at the State AAA tournament in Selah.

Isaac Wersland blasted a pair of home runs, and Pepsi Pak rolled past the Spokane Northstars (1-1) 11-1.

The host Yakima Beetles defeated the Spokane Bandits (0-2) 11-0.

Soccer

Joel Duncan scored the opening goal and provided two assists and the Spokane Shadow routed host Wenatchee 6-0. Chase Reidt added a goal and an assist for the Shadow (8-4-1), who earned their biggest win of the season. The Shadow men and women will both close out the Evergreen Premier League season Saturday against South Sound at Spokane Falls.

Golf

Spokane’s Alex Prugh shot a final-round 67 to finish in a tie for eighth in the Web.com Utah Championship in Lehi, Utah. Prugh totaled an eight-under 276. Joel Dahmen from Clarkston tied for 32nd with a two-under 282.
