Newsmakers: Wizards announce re-signing of shooting guard Bradley Beal

Signed The Washington Wizards have re-signed shooting guard Bradley Beal. The team did not announce the terms of the deal Tuesday, but the AP reported this month that Beal agreed to a five-year contract worth $128 million. The No. 3 overall draft pick in 2012, he averaged a career-high 17.4 points in his fourth season, pairing with John Wall to form one of the NBA’s most dynamic young backcourts.

Miami shooting guard Dion Waiters has signed a $5.93 million, two-year contract with the Heat, and he’ll compete for a starting job as Dwyane Wade’s replacement. Waiters was one of the top free agents left on the market. He became an unrestricted free agent when Oklahoma City rescinded a $6.8 million qualifying offer. The second year of his Miami deal includes a player option. He will compete for playing time with Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson and Wayne Ellington. Wade, a 12-time All-Star, signed a $47 million, two-year deal with the Chicago Bulls.

The Detroit Red Wings have avoided arbitration and signed defenseman Danny DeKeyser to a $30 million, six-year contract. DeKeyser will count $5 million against the salary cap throughout the length of the deal.

Announced Florida center Gorjok Gak will not be eligible to play as a freshman next season. The Gators announced that the NCAA cleared Gak for enrollment this fall but denied his ineligibility for the 2016-17 season. The 6-foot-11, 205-pounder from Australia will be allowed to practice and take part in basketball-related activities, but not games.

Former Houston guard L.J. Rose has decided to transfer to BYU, coach Dave Rose said Tuesday. He will be eligible to play as a graduate-transfer senior during the upcoming season. Rose averaged 5.7 points and 3.6 assists during stints at Baylor and Houston. He’s played in 82 games and started 44. The 6-foot-3 Houston native played just two games last season due to a foot injury.

Died Irish jockey JT McNamara, who was paralyzed following a fall at the Cheltenham Festival in 2013, has died. He was 41. McNamara’s death was announced by The Irish Turf Club, which didn’t provide a cause.

Extended Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue has been rewarded with a multiyear contract extension after leading the Cavaliers to an NBA title. Lue took over when David Blatt was fired in January and led the Cavs to the championship, the first Cleveland pro sports team to win it all since 1964. Terms of Lue’s extension were not immediately known.
