Summer heat stays in place

Hot summer weather will linger over the Inland Northwest until the end of the week before changes arrive on Saturday and Sunday.

Spokane should see plenty of sunshine and highs in the middle 90s on Thursday and Friday before a cold front crosses the region at midday on Saturday.

The temperature should still stay hot on Saturday with highs around 90, but southwest winds may kick up.

National Weather Service forecasters said they are keeping a close eye on the wind, high temperature and low humidity for high wildfire danger.

Breezy winds could continue on Sunday, but highs will drop into the lower 80s as the cool air behind Saturday’s cold front takes affect.

However, forecasters said their computer models are not showing strong winds over the weekend.

Low temperatures in the Spokane area should be some of the mildest this year with temperatures dropping at night to the middle and lower 60s on Thursday and Friday night before getting down to around 59 on Saturday night.

The next two days could see temperatures rivaling the 95 and 96 degrees recorded on June 5 and 6, which are so far the hottest days of the year.

The persistent low pressure area in western Canada that kept July temperatures down has retreated to the north and allowed more warm air to circulate into the region on the edge of high air pressure system.

The risk of thunderstorms across the northern mountains appears to have waned for the next several days.

The mountains near Sandpoint should have sunny weather with highs in the 80s. Winds should stay on the lighter side.
