Achievements: Area residents graduate from basic military training

Area residents have graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Amber Wilson is the daughter of Spokane resident Deana Wilson.

Air Force Airman Alexander Olson is the son of Kent and Robin Olson, of Spokane.

Air Force National Guard Airman 1st Class David Alsept Jr. graduated in 2012 from Reardan High School. He is the son of David and Donna Alsept, of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Tyler Barthole is the son of Lorraine Barthole, of Spokane Valley, and a 2015 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Air Force Airman Brandon Creeley is the son of Spokane Valley residents Douglas and Teresa Creeley.

Several area residents have graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina.

Army Pvt. Jasmine Melo graduated in 2015 from Ferris High School. She is the daughter of Spokane resident Rochelle Cantu.

Army Pvt. Bryson Barker is the son of Christi Barker and step-son of Scott Barker, of Spokane. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 2015.

U.S. Army Pvt. Tyler Witzmann is a 2015 graduate of Shadle Park High School and the son of Spokane residents Dina Wilson and Jeff Witzmann.

Jonas Mebes graduated from basic training as a private first class at United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. Mebes is the son of Shawn and Heidi Hastings, of Kettle Falls.

Nicholas Beine, a 2016 graduate of Ferris High School, has received an Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship to attend the University of Washington in Seattle.

Local scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded in the Boy Scouts of America.

Andrew Ferrero and Nathan Leland are members of Troop 413 Otis Orchards and sophomores at Central Valley High School. For his project, Ferrero built an ADA accessible picnic table and concrete walkway the Liberty Lake Municipal Library. Leland’s project included re-surfacing several park playgrounds in Liberty Lake to a child-safe bark for the Meadowwood Homeowner’s Association.

Nathan Budke and Bryan Krych are members of Boy Scout Troop 313 of Chinook District and juniors at Lewis and Clark High School. Budke is the son of Jeff and Janet Budke, of Spokane. His project included installing multiple navigational signs at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Krych is the son of Spokane residents Pat and Karen Krych. He planted a new flower bed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for his project.

Three high school students have earned Camp Fire’s highest achievement, the Wohelo Award.

Central Valley High School senior Matthew Ellis, son of Kim Ellis, chaired Ad-Di-Ho Family Camp 2015, organized camp improvements and taught first aid and recycling courses. Ellis currently serves as a youth representative on Camp Fire Inland Northwest’s board of directors.

Mead High School senior Casey Ball has coordinated events for Camp Fire and the community, including Walk Out of Darkness for Suicide Awareness and Unity in the Community. Ball is the daughter of Jason Ball and Tracy Taitch.

Mead senior Angela Basinger started a Camp Fire club at Brentwood Elementary School and is a summer camp counselor at Camp Dart-Lo where she helps maintain the camp, volunteers at various camp events and teaches children Camp Fire traditions. Basinger is the daughter of Ed and Jill Basinger.
