Man carrying meth leads deputy on foot chase, police say

A bicyclist carrying a container of methamphetamine ditched his bike and led a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy on a foot chase Saturday night in Spokane Valley.

Kelley E. Herrin, 37, was riding a bike near Park Road and Sprague Avenue. At about 11 p.m., the deputy stopped him for riding at night without a headlamp, a Sheriff’s Office news release says.

Herrin said he was only riding a short distance to see his girlfriend and mentioned that the state might have a warrant out for his arrest, the release says. The deputy confirmed there was a warrant, so Herrin threw his bike to the ground and darted off.

The deputy gave chase and caught up to Herrin when he tripped in the parking lot of 111 N. Ella Road. That’s when Herrin’s girlfriend showed up and started yelling at the deputy, the release says. She complied when the deputy ordered her to back down, it says.

In Herrin’s backback, the deputy found a glass pipe and a plastic container of a white crystal substance that later tested positive for meth, the release says. He’s being held in the Spokane County Jail on two bonds totaling $10,000.
