NWC putting on Crusader Sports Camp

Northwest Christian School is inviting boys and girls entering first through eighth grades to its Crusader Sports Camp, Tuesday.

The camps, which include boys basketball, football and baseball, and girls softball, basketball and volleyball, will be held in four 90-minute sessions each day. Athletes can sign up for more than one session.

Camps cost $20 per session with a $15 registration fee. Campers will receive a NWC Crusader Camp T-shirt.

Spokane Valley Arts awards scholarships

Four high school students were recently awarded Spokane Valley Arts Council Student Art Scholarships.

Hannah Anderson, of Central Valley High School, Anastasia Schofield, of East Valley High School, Emily Ruiz, of Mica Peak High School (ITRACC), and Melody Fyre, of Spokane Valley High School, all received $1,000 Student Art Scholarships.

Anderson was also awarded the $1,000 Lynn Baiter Memorial Scholarship.

Powell awarded

$1,000 scholarship

Anne Powell, a senior at Mead High School, has won the $1,000 National Pawnbrokers Association Future Business Leaders of America Scholarship. Powell was nominated by Double Eagle Pawn Owner Sean Carbary. She will study business and biology at Whitworth College in the fall.

Logan students take top speech honors

Logan Elementary School fifth-graders Sofia Lopez and Leileena Harvey recently took top honors at the 25th annual Speech and Declamation competition, where students are scored on memorization, gestures, poise and voice inflection/articulation, similar to a poetry slam.

Ferris students win

photography awards

Three Ferris High School students were named national winners in the Photographic Society of America’s high school photography contest.

Matt Apitz placed first in the Photographers Choice category, winning best in show and receiving $350 for his photo, “Streets of Seattle.”

Abby Gibson placed first in the Monochromatic category, winning $175, for her photo, “Kate’s Shadow.”

Kate Gibson placed third in the People and Animals category for her photo, “A Hint of Glow.”

Salk, Rogers teams place at MESA

Teams from Salk Middle School and Rogers High School recently won first place at the MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement) State Championship, which was at the Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond.

The Salk and Rogers teams competed in the Prosthetic Arm Competition, where they designed, built and used a prosthetic arm and used electronics and programming to operate it.

Teams from Cheney Middle School and Rogers High School competed in the Computer Simulation Challenge, where they produced a computer simulation that taught users a lesson or skill. The Cheney team’s simulation focused on atmospheric science lessons that the students learned in class, and the Rogers team’s simulation taught users how to use items in nature to make a splint for a rolled ankle.

Salk’s team will represent Washington at the MESA National Competition June 22-25 in Ogden, Utah.

LC music groups

win awards at festival

The Lewis and Clark High School music department recently earned multiple awards from the San Francisco Heritage Festival.

The chamber orchestra won first place, a gold rating, the Adjudicator’s Award and outstanding instrumental group. The symphony orchestra won a silver rating. The orchestra won sweepstakes instrumental program, and Kevin McCracken and Peyton Hockett both won maestro awards.

The chamber choir won first place, a gold rating and outstanding choral group. Cantabile won a silver rating, and the choir was named a Sweepstakes Choral Program.

Jazz Ensemble I won a gold rating, and Jazz Ensemble II won a silver rating. Symphonic Winds won a gold rating, an Adjudicator’s Award and outstanding band group. The concert symphonic band won a silver rating, and the band was named a Sweepstakes Instrumental Program. Devin Connor, Duncan Lang, Anthony Manoguerra and Jonathan Benecchi all won maestro awards, and Anna Copley won an ovation award.

The entire program was also named a Sweepstakes for Total Program.

GSL selects

coaches of year

The following coaches were recently selected as 2016 GSL Coaches of the Year: John Mires (Mead High School boys track and field), Annette Helling (Mt. Spokane High School girls track and field), Kevin Houston (Mead boys soccer) and Eleen Northcutt (Mt. Spokane girls golf).

Mt. Spokane Assistant Girls Golf Coach Ryan Nelson was voted Assistant Coach of the Year.

Reyes reappointed

to achievement panel

Gov. Jay Inslee recently reappointed Mead School District’s Special Services Assistant Superintendent Susana Reyes to serve on the Washington Student Achievement Council, which strives to advance educational opportunities and promote higher levels of educational attainment.

Reyes began serving on the council in June 2013, and her new term runs through June 2019.

Reyes is also the 2016-17 president-elect for the Washington Educational Research Association and will serve as president in 2017-18.
