Newsmakers: Andy Murray to defend Olympic singles title at Rio Games
Selected Defending Olympic champion Andy Murray will lead a four-member British tennis team at the Rio de Janeiro Games. The two-time Grand Slam champion was officially selected by the British Olympic Association, along with brother Jamie Murray, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson.
Granted Illinois guard Tracy Abrams was given a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after he missed last season with a torn left Achilles tendon. Abrams last played in 2013-14 and was second on the team in scoring with 10.7 points a game and led the Illini in assists with 3.2 a game. He has been a four-time team captain.
Investigated Baylor University and former football coach Art Briles wants to quickly settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by a woman who says the Baptist school was indifferent to her complaints that she was raped by a player, according to court documents. Jasmin Hernandez sued the Waco, Texas, school in March amid the school’s investigation into how it mishandled cases of assault. The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify sexual assault victims but Hernandez has spoken publicly to draw attention to the case.
Ordered A Philadelphia judge has ordered the public release of sealed documents from a lawsuit that could reveal details about a claim that a boy told Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in 1976 that Jerry Sandusky had molested him.
Announced Russell Westbrook and James Harden announced they won’t play in the Olympics, leaving the U.S. basketball team without two of its best players. Neither player mentioned a reason for their decisions.
