Chiefs trade Matt Sozanski to Moose Jaw

The Spokane Chiefs made one upcoming decision a bit easier Wednesday when they traded defenseman Matt Sozanski to Moose Jaw.

The Chiefs received a sixth-round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft in exchange for the 20-year-old Sozanski.

Sozanski, who scored three goals in 144 career games for the Chiefs, would have faced a tough time making the team. Even with the move the Chiefs still have five overage players; forwards Keanu Yamamoto, Markson Bechtold, Jacob Cardiff, Dominic Zwerger and goaltender Jayden Sittler.

The team has until Oct. 16 to pick the league-mandated limit of three overage players.

“Looking at our overage player situation for next season, this was a move we had to make,” general manager Tim Speltz said. “We wish him the very best in Moose Jaw.”

Chiefs’ preseason announced

Also on Wednesday, the Chiefs announced their 2016 preseason schedule. They will play seven games beginning on Sept. 2 against Vancouver in Everett.

Their only home game will be on Sept. 17 at 2:05 p.m. against the Tr-City Americans.
