Newsmakers: Breanna Stewart signs with Chinese pro team

Signed According to media reports in China, Seattle Storm’s Breanna Stewart has signed with Shanghai of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association. The signing was reported by the Xinhua News Agency and the Shanghai Daily newspaper. Stewart is averaging 15.2 points and a WNBA-leading 10.1 rebounds as a rookie for the Seattle Storm. She was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft after leading UConn to four consecutive national championships.

The UFC signed lightweight Will Brooks to a multi-fight contract after Bellator released its reigning champion last month. Brooks will make his UFC debut July 8 in Las Vegas against Ross Pearson.

Reported Dolphins safety Reshad Jones joined minicamp after missing the first day of the mandatory sessions in a contract dispute. Jones had also skipped Miami’s earlier organized team activities, which were voluntary, but he reported for the second of three minicamp practices.

Announced Grizzlies guard Jordan Adams is having cartilage transplanted into his right knee, the one he had surgery on last August after tearing the meniscus in an offseason workout.

A California coroner says imprisoned former NFL RB Lawrence Phillips had a “Do Not Resuscitate” note taped to his chest when he was found hanging in his cell. The autopsy report says a deputy Kern County coroner found another note and a picture of Phillips and an unnamed child tucked into Phillips’ left sock. The coroner ruled that the 40-year-old Phillips committed suicide in Kern Valley State Prison in January. He was awaiting a trial that could have brought him the death penalty.

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired forwards Teuvo Teravainen and Bryan Bickell from the Blackhawks in exchange for two draft picks.

The Washington Capitals say Karl Alzner had sports hernia surgery and is expected to be “completely healthy” before the start of next season.

Unbeaten light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev is the latest professional boxer to decide he won’t try to win a spot in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The two-time Russian Olympian announced his decision through his Canadian promoter, Yvon Michel.

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) recently voted to allow professional fighters to compete for spots in the Rio field, but the Olympic sport’s governing body is finding very few interested pros outside of AIBA’s in-house professional competitions.

Departed Notre Dame Corey Robinson, the son of former NBA great David Robinson and the most experienced wide receiver on the Fighting Irish roster, is walking away from football because of multiple concussions. Robinson, who will continue with the team as a student assistant, said he was grateful for the opportunity to play at Notre Dame and looked “forward to a great senior year.”

Failed Four Olympic weightlifting gold medalists from Kazakhstan are facing sanctions after failing the retest of their doping samples from the 2012 Games. The four gold medalists are among 10 athletes from five ex-Soviet countries whose samples tested positive for banned substances in retesting conducted by the International Olympic Committee.

The four Kazakhs included men’s 94-kilogram champion Ilya Ilyin, and women’s gold medalists Zulfiya Chinshanlo (53 kilogram class), Maiya Maneza (63 kilogram) and Svetlana Podobedova (75 kilogram).
