Newsmakers: Ex-Seahawk Derrick Coleman pleads not guilty to hit-run

Pleaded Former Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman has pleaded not guilty on Thursday to felony hit and run and vehicular assault in connection with a car crash in October. He could face up to 16 months behind bars if convicted of both charges. … Former NBA player Kermit Washington has pleaded not guilty to fraud charges accusing him of embezzling nearly a half million dollars from his Project Contact Africa charity. Washington was arrested last month in California after a federal grand jury in Kansas City indicted him.

Granted A Pennsylvania judge is granting former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky three days of hearings in August to develop more information about the claims and arguments he’s made in seeking to have his child molestation conviction overturned.

Signed The Detroit Red Wings have signed center Riley Sheahan to a two-year, $4.15 million contract. Sheahan had 14 goals and 25 points in a career-high 81 games last season. … The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Cam Ward to a two-year, $6.6 million contract extension. Ward will be paid $3.5 million next season and $3.1 million in 2017-18.

Named The Los Angeles Kings named Anze Kopitar their new captain, taking the job away from longtime captain Dustin Brown. Brown had been the Kings’ captain for eight seasons since 2008, raising the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. But the American center’s play has dipped markedly in recent years.

sidelined Warriors center, Andrew Bogut all but ruled himself out of the Rio Olympics, saying the bone bruises around his left knee almost certainly will not be healed in time for him to play for Australia this summer.

Banned The South Korean women’s professional basketball league is considering permanently banning and erasing the statistics of star American player, Chelsey Lee, accused of forging her birth documents in a bid to qualify to compete in the domestic competition. Lee, a Miami-born center, won the league rookie of the year honor for 2015-16 after averaging 15.2 points and 10.4 rebounds for KEB Hana Bank.

Dismissed The IAAF dismissed allegations that Sebastian Coe was aware of details of a Russian doping corruption case four months before it became public, or that he enlisted support for his presidential campaign from a key figure in the sport’s current doping scandal.
