College baseball: Nathan Bannister matched his career high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings and Arizona capitalized on Miami starter Michael Mediavilla’s rocky first inning a 5-1 victory Saturday night in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Wildcats (45-21), in the CWS for the first time since winning the 2012 national title, will play Oklahoma State on Monday night in a Bracket 1 winners’ game. The No. 3 national seed Hurricanes (50-13) will face UC Santa Barbara in an elimination game that afternoon.

Mediavilla hit two of Arizona’s first five batters and issued a bases-loaded walk before Jared Oliva’s two-run single made it 3-0.

Zach Gibbons’ two-run double in the fifth increased the lead to 5-1. Bannister, who made his 13th straight start of at least six innings, confounded Miami batters mixing in his curveball with an upper 80s fastball.

Cowboys edge Gauchos: Thomas Hatch threw a complete game, Garrett Benge singled in the only run in the fourth inning and Oklahoma State opened the College World Series with a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hatch extended his shutout streak to 26 innings with his fourth complete game and third shutout of the season.

The Cowboys (42-20) will play Monday against the Arizona Wildcats. The Gauchos (42-19-1) will meet the Miami Hurricanes on Monday.

Messi starts, Argentina beats Venezuela 4-1

Soccer: Lionel Messi scored and added two assists in his first Copa America start this year to lead Argentina over Venezuela 4-1 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and into a semifinal against the host United States. Messi’s goal in the 60th minute gave Argentina a 3-0 lead and was his 54th in international play, tying the national record set by Gabriel Batistuta, according to Argentina’s governing body. The Barcelona star also took over the Copa America scoring lead with his fourth goal of the tournament.

Chile routs Mexico: Eduardo Vargas scored four goals, Edson Puch added two, and defending champion Chile thoroughly dismantled Mexico from every angle in a 7-0 Copa America quarterfinal trouncing in Santa Clara, California, one day shy of a year since El Tri’s last loss to Ecuador in the Copa group stage.

Portugal held to draw: Cristiano Ronaldo experienced a night to forget on his record 128th Portugal appearance, missing a late penalty in a 0-0 draw against Austria that left his team winless after two matches at the European Championship in Paris.

As goalkeeper Robert Almer dived to his left, Ronaldo struck the spotkick in the opposite direction but it crashed against the post in the 79th minute. Ronaldo then thought he had netted his 59th Portugal goal about five minutes later, but it was ruled out for offside.

Iceland ties Hungary on own-goal: Birkir Saevarsson scored a late own-goal to hand Hungary a 1-1 draw with Iceland in Marseille, France, in another European Championship match affected by crowd trouble. Saevarsson turned a cross from Nemanja Nikolic into his own net as Iceland was headed for its first victory at a major tournament.

As the players celebrated the 88th-minute equalizer, Hungarian fans threw flares onto the field and into a group of nearby police officers, delaying the restart.

Lukaku leads Belgium: Romelu Lukaku scored two second-half goals to help Belgium bounce back from its opening defeat at the European Championship, with a 3-0 victory against Ireland in Bordeaux, France.

Bucks break ground on arena project

Miscellany: The Milwaukee Bucks had yet to go through the formalities of breaking ground on their downtown arena when co-owner Jamie Dinan wondered else might be in store: Maybe another celebration in a few years. The Bucks, who finished last in their division, hope they’re on to better things.

Public financing will cover $250 million of the $500 million project, with the current and former owners paying for the rest. It is to be completed for the start of the 2018-19 season.

Team and municipal officials also see the project as a way to spur downtown development. The arena will be built on what was a parking lot across the street from the Bucks’ current home, the Bradley Center.

Vetanen re-signs: Defenseman Sami Vatanen re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks, agreeing to a four-year, $19.5 million deal through the 2019-20 season. Vatanen was a restricted free agent after recording nine goals and a career-high 29 assists last season.

IOC supports decision to ban Russians: The International Olympic Committee threw its support behind the decision to ban Russia’s track and field team from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and said it will take “further far-reaching measures” to crack down on doping ahead of the games. The IOC said it supports and “fully respects” Friday’s ruling by track and field’s world governing body to maintain its ban on Russia because of widespread doping. The IOC, which has ultimate authority over the Olympics, also noted that the IAAF has control over which track and field athletes are eligible to compete at the games.

Thompson, Chun share lead: Her ailing back a bit better, defending champion Lexi Thompson shot a 5-under 66 for a share of the Meijer LPGA Classic lead with In Gee Chun in Belmont, Michigan.

Thompson birdied five of the first 13 holes at Blythefield in her bogey-free round to match Chun at 15-under 198. The 21-year-old American birdied three of the four par-5 holes and is 9 under overall on the par 5s.

Zverev beats Federer at Gerry Weber Open

Tennis: Roger Federer’s bid for a ninth title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, came to an end when he was beaten in the semifinals by Alexander Zverev, a rising German prospect who notched the biggest win of his young career. Zverev will meet Florian Mayer, who beat third-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4.

It also means that Federer, with 17 Grand Slam titles, still remains without a title in a year marred by knee surgery and a back injury that forced him to miss the French Open.

Murray nears record fifth title: Andy Murray is one win away from becoming the first five-time champion at Queen’s Club after he defeated fifth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in London to reach Sunday’s final.

Murray plays Milos Raonic in the final after the third-seeded Canadian beat unseeded Bernard Tomic of Australia 6-4, 6-4.

Keys moves to final: Madison Keys broke into the top 10 in the women’s rankings for the first time by beating Carla Suarez Navarro and advancing to the Aegon Classic final in Birmingham, England. The 21-year-old American won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
