Spokane NAACP chapter has new president

Phillip Tyler is taking over as president of Spokane’s NAACP chapter, replacing Naima Quarles-Burnley, who is moving out of town.

Tyler, an Air Force veteran and former lieutenant at the Spokane County Jail, became vice president of the NAACP chapter in October 2015. He was a finalist for an open city council seat earlier this year in district 2, but local attorney Breean Beggs was ultimately selected.

Tyler said he hopes to focus on getting more young activists engaged in the NAACP chapter and improving communication between older community members and the young.

“It’s those young social justice advocates that are going to carry this light forward,” he said.

Tyler was sworn in at a general membership meeting Monday night. Quarles-Burnley and her family are moving to Dayton, Ohio.
