Rough eighth inning costs Indians sweep of Dust Devils

PASCO – The Spokane Indians were well on their way to a three-game Northwest League sweep of the Tri-City Dust Devils until disaster struck in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday.

Spokane starter Kyle Cody fired four shutout innings and left with a 2-0 lead and reliever Reid Anderson followed with three scoreless innings to hold court.

But Indians reliever Alex Daniele (0-1) struggled in the eighth and his defense failed to pick him up. The end result was a three-run rally by the Dust Devils – on a hit batter, two errors, two wild pitches and a two-out, two-run single by Hunter Redman – for a 3-2 victory to avoid the sweep.

Spokane jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Blaine Prescott led off the game with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Smith. The Indians added a run in the top of the second when Xavier Turner opened with a walk and moved to third on an error scored on a sac fly by Alex Kowalczyk.
