Weekend weather: Windy cold front arrives Friday, but weather improves after that

A windy cold front is expected across the Inland Northwest starting late Thursday and Friday, but conditions are likely to settle down and warm back up on Saturday and Sunday for Hoopfest.

National Weather Service forecasters said that Thursday’s weather will bring an increase of clouds for partly sunny skies and breezy southwest winds with gusts to 20 mph.

Temperatures should be mild on Thursday with a high in the middle 70s in Spokane and lower 70s in North Idaho.

A new area of low air pressure in the upper atmosphere is expected to move southward out of British Columbia Thursday and circulate a cold front over the region for Thursday night and Friday.

Showers are likely across parts of Eastern Washington and most of North Idaho on Friday, along with stronger southwest winds and gusts to 30 mph, even in areas that do not receive showers.

Highs on Friday will stay in the 60s.

Parts of North Idaho could see one-tenth to one-quarter inch of rain.

The Spokane area might see less than one-tenth inch of rain. The Columbia Basin should remain dry.

Any thunderstorms could bring heavier rain accumulations where they develop, forecasters said.

The low exits the region on Saturday to be replaced by an area of high air pressure.

The high will bring mostly sunny skies and comfortable temperatures with highs in the middle 70s in Spokane on Saturday.

On Sunday, the mercury jumps into the lower and middle 80s in Spokane with more sunshine.

Summer conditions should extend into Tuesday at least when highs may make 90 degrees.

Lows through the weekend will be in the 50s, except Friday night when the low could fall to the upper 40s.

The normal temperatures for Spokane this time of year is 75 for a high and 52 for a low.
