Armed man shot by officer prompts internal review
SEATTLE – An internal investigation is underway after an officer responding to a domestic violence call shot an armed man June 19.
The Seattle Times reported that Michael Uivary is in serious condition at a hospital and charged with second-degree assault.
Charging documents said Uivary has a history of mental health issues and suicide attempts.
The documents said Uivary told his husband that he’d taken an Ambien and Xanax pills every hour for six hours.
His husband took the pills away.
Uivary eventually woke up and confronted his husband, who called 911.
Officers arrived to find Uivary armed with two knives.
The Force Review Board will look at Seattle Police Department Officer Sarah Velling’s choice to fire a gun rather than her Taser.
Velling is on paid administrative leave.
