Letters to the sports editor: Ed Sharman made a difference

Sharman made a difference in community

Back in the day, I was employed at Lakeland Village’s care facility for the physically and mentally challenged. My job was to introduce these special individuals into the mainstream population via the utilization of an educational awareness community activity. The activity was the Special Olympics.

By sheer chance, on a flight to Olympia for a Special Olympics gathering, my seatmate was an attractive lady named Linda Sharman. She noticed my Special Olympics lapel pin. … Long story short, after hearing about the program, she told me to contact KHQ and her husband, Ed. After a nice conversation with Ed and Leigh Hess, Ed said “this is a go” which indicated that I had his full support.

Ed Sharman, assisted me many, many times by opening doors to the business community for the launching of the Spokane Special Olympics. I believe that it can safely be said that Ed Sharman was instrumental in establishing the Special Olympics here in Spokane and in the State of Washington. I truly appreciated his knowledge of Spokane and his willingness to support that endeavor.

Kudos to John Blanchette, The Spokesman Review sports columnist, for profiling the former KHQ Sports Director’s vast contributions, not only to his own profession, but in promoting various community service programs. Sharman, with his good looks, charm, wit and intelligence, never wavered from “caring enough to make a difference” for his beloved community.
