State’s Special Olympics Winter Games start Friday in Wenatchee

WENATCHEE – The opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics Winter Games in Wenatchee Friday night should be “amazing,” a key organizer says.

Along with the regular glitz, there will be a performance by the Seahawks’ Blue Thunder drumline and a chance to visit with a few Sea Gals and with Blitz, the Seahawks mascot.

Still need more prompting? How about a free pair of athletic shoes?

Brooks shoes is this year’s Winter Games sponsor and reps will be offering a free pair of Brooks to every adult who attends. They are bringing 4,500 pairs, said Carol Andre, deputy director of the Special Olympics Winter Games Committee.

“We want the public to come and see this amazing event,” she said. “Until you come and see, you really don’t get the impact. We want people in those seats to see what an awesome event it is.”

The opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. at the Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave. Admission is free.

Upward of 1,800 athletes are expected at the Winter Games, which take place in Wenatchee and Leavenworth Friday through Sunday, said Andre, deputy director of the Games and also recreation supervisor for the Wenatchee Parks and Recreation Department. All the athletes had to compete at local and regional events to qualify for the state event.

About 500 volunteers also make the Winter Games possible, Andre said. More volunteers are needed. People can sign up at sowa.org or call Andre at 888-3282.

In addition to competition, athletes also will be able to spend time at Olympic Town in the Convention Center, where low-key activities will be happening, such as making bead bracelets and having pictures taken. Later on Saturday, there will be a hair and nail salon ahead of a big dance.
