Newsmakers: Coker settles with UTSA

Agreed Head football coach Larry Coker, who was fired in January from Texas-San Antonio with 3 years left on his contract, agreed on Thursday to accept a $650,000 settlement from the university.

Died Hall of Fame defenseman, Bill Gadsby who played 20 seasons in the NHL for Chicago, Detroit and the New York Rangers, has died. He was 88.

Requested Brazilian sprinter Ana Claudia Lemos, the South American record-holder in the 100 and 200 meters, has tested positive for the anabolic steroid oxandrolone, the Brazil Anti-Doping Authority said. In a statement to The Associated Press, they only confirmed the case, and said Lemos requested the B sample be tested.

Joined Free agent, Pedro Alvarez has joined a Baltimore Orioles lineup that’s already loaded. The Orioles finalized their $5.75 million, one-year contract with Alvarez.

A 29-year-old power hitter, Alvarez has 131 homers in six major league seasons and was an All-Star in 2013.

Repaired Cardinals shortstop Johnny Peralta had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb and likely will be sidelined for 10-to-12 weeks.

Manager Mike Matheny anticipated Peralta will return in a few days to the team’s spring training site.

Released LSU coach Les Miles says he has granted quarterback Anthony Jennings’ release to transfer to another school to finish his college career.

Miles says LSU wishes him “nothing but good fortune” and appreciates all he has done for the Tigers.

Suspended New York Red Bulls defender Ronald Zubar and Vancouver Whitecaps defender Christian Bolanos have been suspended for one game each and fined undisclosed amounts for rough play. Zubar was penalized for a serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent during the Red Bulls’ 2-0 loss to Toronto FC. Bolanos also was sanctioned for a serious foul play during the Whitecaps’ 3-2 loss to Montreal.

Fired Saint Louis fired coach Jim Crews moments after the Billikens finished a second straight losing season with a 73-65 loss to George Washington in the Atlantic-10 Tournament.

Dismissed Rutgers basketball coach, Eddie Jordan has been dismissed, Rutgers athletic director Patrick Hobbs said. The firing comes less than 24 hours after Nebraska defeated Rutgers in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament.
