Stream on Demand: Netflix launches new series

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

The Peanuts Movie brings Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang from Charles M. Schultz’s beloved comic strip (and endless TV specials) back to the big screen. This one is computer animated but don’t worry, the adults still speak with wah-wah voices and Dr. Lucy Van Pelt dishes advice for a mere 5 cents. Rated G.

In the Heart of the Sea tells the true survival story of New England whalers in 1820 that inspired “Moby Dick.” Chris Hemsworth stars and Ron Howard directs the seafaring epic. Available in 3-D from some providers. PG-13.

Also new: Macbeth with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. R.

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is the drama Hyena Road about a Canadian platoon in Afghanistan (R).

Netflix

Will Arnett is a recovering alcoholic with a con man’s patter and a life slowly unraveling in the new Netflix original comedy Flaked: Season 1.” Eight half-hour episodes now available. Also new is the original skit series Netflix Presents: The Characters: Season 1.”

More streaming TV: Cuckoo: Seasons 1-2 is a British comedy with Andy Samberg as an American slacker married into a proper British family and for the kids there are new seasons of Dinotrux,” “Digimon Fusion,” and Popples.”

New films include the indie drama Hateship Loveship (2013) with Kristen Wiig and Guy Pearce (R), the German heist thriller Victoria (2015) (not rated), and The Forbidden Room (2015), Guy Maddin’s anthology of surreal stories and luscious images (not rated).

Amazon Prime Video

Bosch: Season 2,” the Amazon original series based on the novels of Michael Connelly, sends LAPD Det. Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) to Las Vegas on a new murder investigation. It’s contemporary police detective fiction for the small screen. 10 episodes.

Gear up for the “Ghostbusters” reboot with the original Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989). Both are PG.

HBO Now

The espionage action spoof Spy reunites Melissa McCarthy with her “Bridemaids” co-star Rose Byrne and director Paul Feig. Jude Law, Jason Statham, and Allison Janney provide comic support. R.

A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness,” this year’s Oscar winner for best documentary short subject, examines honor killings in Pakistan. No rating.

Showtime Anytime

Tim Burton takes on the strange true story behind the kitschy paintings that became a pop culture phenomenon in the 1960s in Big Eyes (2014), starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. PG-13.
