Newsmakers: Canadiens’ P.K. Subban released from hospital, consecutive games streak will end

Released Defenseman P.K. Subban was released from the hospital after the Montreal Canadiens star was removed from the ice on a stretcher with a neck injury Thursday. Coach Michel Therrien said Subban will undergo treatment and won’t play Saturday against Minnesota, ending his streak of 273 straight regular-season games.

Injured Philadelphia 76ers rookie center Jahlil Okafor will have season-ending surgery on his right knee. He is expected to resume basketball activities in about six weeks. Okafor, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2015 draft, leads the NBA-worst Sixers with 17.5 points and averaged 7.0 rebounds in 53 games.

Announced Thunder assistant coach Monty Williams will not return to the team this season as he continues to help his family heal following the death of his wife, Ingrid, from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Feb. 9 near downtown Oklahoma City. Williams is in his first season as an assistant for Billy Donovan. He was head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans last season.

Cleared Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane will not face criminal charges following an investigation into a possible sexual assault after prosecutors said there was no evidence to support the allegation, closing a two-month investigation. Kane is tied for second among Sabres with 19 goals and fourth with 31 points in 58 games this season, his first in Buffalo and seventh in the NHL.

Died Former NFL defensive lineman Gary Jeter, who played for the Giants and Rams during a 13-year career, has died. He was 61. No cause or other details were given. Jeter was drafted out of Southern California in 1977 by the New York Giants with the fifth overall selection. He played six seasons for them, then another six for the Rams and one in New England. Jeter finished with 52 sacks for his career, with a high of 11 1/2 in 1988. Sacks became an official statistic in 1983, the year he joined the Rams.

Fired The University of Denver fired Joe Scott after a nine-year run as head coach. Scott was 146-132 since being brought in to run the basketball program in 2007. The Pioneers’ season wrapped up on Monday with a 54-53 loss to South Dakota State in the Summit League tournament semifinals. Denver finished 16-15.

UCF fired basketball coach Donnie Jones following a loss to Tulane in the first round of the American Athletic Conference tournament. UCF finished 12-18, including 6-12 in league.
