Area roundup: North Idaho men eliminated from NJCAA tournament

David Burrell hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 and Brandon Key finished with 11 assists to help the Southwest Tennessee Saluqis (30-4) hold off the North Idaho Cardinals 73-72 at the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, on Tuesday.

Braydon Blake poured in a game-high 28 points for North Idaho (31-2), which led 43-40 at the half. NIC reserve Trey Burch-Manning was the only other Cardinal to score in double figures with 13.

Women’s golf

The Washington State Cougars finished 14th in the 15-team Arizona Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona.

Senior Monica Huang paced WSU with a 6-over-par 222, tying her for 25th place.

Arizona carded a 7-under 857 over three rounds to claim the team title. Arizona’s Krystal Quihuis (209) was the medalist.

Awards

The Whitworth Pirates had three track athletes earn Northwest Conference honors.

Sophomore Kayla Brase was the women’s field athlete of the week; junior Magie Callan was the top track athlete; and senior Corey Burt was the men’s field athlete of the week.

Senior Samantha Polayes became Gonzaga’s first WCC women’s tennis player of the week after posting her school-record 75th career win. Polayes and Sophie Whittle were the doubles team of the week.
