FORT WORTH, Texas – A man has been charged in a shootout with Fort Worth police that left his fugitive father dead and an officer critically injured.

Police said Wednesday that 20-year-old Ed McIver Jr. is charged with attempted capital murder, evading arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Officer Matt Pearce, a former Pullman firefighter and Washington State University graduate, remains in critical condition Wednesday following surgery. Police are trying to determine who shot him.

The shootout Tuesday happened after officers tried to arrest 43-year-old Ed McIver Sr. on two aggravated assault charges and for jumping bail. The elder McIver Jr. was killed in the exchange of gunfire. His son was captured hours later with a rifle.

Online jail records show he is being held on more than $2 million bond. An attorney to speak on McIver’s behalf isn’t listed.
