Stream on Demand: Oscar winners, nominees coming home

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

Pay-per-view / video on demand

The Big Short is the funniest film you’ll see about the economic crash. Filmmaker Adam McKay uses humor to pull audiences into the complex details behind the mortgage bubble and won an Oscar for his clever adaptation of Michael Lewis’ nonfiction book. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling star. R. Also on disc.

Both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara earned Academy Awards nominations for Carol,” a love story of two women in 1950s New York City that earned six Oscar nominations in all. R.

Brooklyn,” starring Saoirse Ronan as an Irish girl in America, sweeps audiences back to a romantic vision of the 1950s for a touching coming-of-age drama. It boasts three Oscar nominations. PG-13.

Also new: the comedy Sisters with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (unrated edition) and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip with Jason Lee and animated singing rodents (PG).

Available same day as in select theaters nationwide is The Program,” starring Ben Foster as Lance Armstrong in a story of the doping scandal, and the father-son reunion comedy The Confirmationwith Clive Owen (PG-13).

Netflix

He’s baaaack! In the Netflix original movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016), giggly child-man Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) hits the road for his first vacation. Not rated but family friendly.

For older kids, Marvel’s Daredevil: Season 2 introduces gun-toting vigilante the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Greek Ninja assassin Elektra (Elodie Yung) to the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen.

From the “truth is stranger than fiction” file comes Finders Keepers (2015), a documentary about the legal battle over a severed leg found in an abandoned storage locker. R.

Amazon Prime Video

The Oscar-winning All the President’s Men (1976), perhaps the greatest film ever made about investigative journalism, turns 40 this year. PG.

Al Pacino is a guilt-ridden cop in Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia (2002), a moody thriller set in the 24-hour daylight of the Arctic summer. R.

Hulu

The comedy Camp (2003) introduced the multitalented Anna Kendrick to movie audiences. Her performance of “The Ladies Who Lunch” kills. PG-13.

HBO Now

Max is a family-friendly drama about a traumatized war dog adopted by a stateside family that helps him heal. PG.

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill presents six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as Billie Holiday in performance in 1959.

Acorn

Australian legal drama Janet King: Series 1 stars Marta Dusseldorp as a prosecutor coming back with a vengeance after maternity leave. New episodes arrive each Monday.
