Newsmakers: Chiefs star LB Houston had knee surgery in February, Stony Brook’s Pikiell is new Rutgers basketball coach

Sidelined Pro Bowl pass rusher Justin Houston could miss the upcoming season for the Kansas City Chiefs after having surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee that bothered him in the playoffs. Houston hurt his knee in a game against Buffalo last November, and at the time it was diagnosed as a hyperextension.

Hired Rutgers has hired Steve Pikiell as their new basketball coach after leading Stony Brook to its first NCAA Tournament this season. The university’s Board of Governors on Tuesday approved a five-year, $8 million contract. Pikiell succeeds Eddie Jordan, who was fired after a 7-25 season.

Inducted Georgia standout Dominique Wilkins and Doug Collins of Illinois State headline the eight member class that will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in November.

Extradited A former aide to the CONCACAF president has been extradited from Switzerland to face bribery charges in the FIFA case. The Swiss justice ministry said in a statement that Costas Takkas, the former secretary general of the Cayman Islands Football Association, was flown from Zurich to New York accompanied by U.S. police officers.

Declared Mississippi State guard Malik Newman says he will declare for the NBA draft, but won’t hire an agent, leaving open the possibility that he could return to school. North Carolina State junior Anthony “Cat” Barber is skipping his final season to pursue an NBA career. Purdue Boilermakers forward Caleb Swanigan plans to enter the NBA draft but will not hire an agent, allowing him to possibly return to school next season.

Announced WNBA free agent Candice Wiggins has announced her retirement from basketball at the age of 29. She played eight years in the league, including the first five with the Minnesota Lynx.

Fractured L.A. Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier will be out 10 to 14 weeks after fracturing his right tibia. Ethier, the projected starter in left field this year, was injured after fouling a ball off his shin during a spring game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Investigated Memphis is launching an investigation into whether A.D. Tom Bowen had a conflict of interest while negotiating basketball coach Josh Pastner’s 2013 raise and contract extension. University President M. David Rudd said in a statement that the school is “retaining an outside source to conduct the review.”
