Newspaper carrier strikes woman walking her dog

A Spokesman-Review newspaper carrier struck and injured a woman walking her dog early Monday morning.

The carrier was driving north in the 12800 block of South Jackson Road around 6 a.m. when he became distracted by his next paper delivery while rounding a curve, the man told deputies. He said he crossed the center line and continued onto the opposite shoulder, where he struck the woman, said Spokane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Mark Gregory.

The woman had non-life-threatening injuries, Gregory said. Her dog initially ran away, but was later located unharmed.

The woman was wearing a florescent orange top with a reflective strip, Gregory said. The driver reportedly told deputies that he frequently saw the woman out walking her dog in the early morning hours.

The carrier, identified as Anthony Derr, was cited for reckless driving.
