Newsmakers: Seattle releases 5, including former starting center Nowak

Released The Seattle Seahawks have released five players including former starting center Drew Nowak. Seattle made the roster moves ahead of their rookie minicamp this weekend. Seattle also released RB Cameron Marshall, TE Ronnie Shields, DE Josh Shirley and WR Tyler Slavin.

Withdrew North Carolina’s Kennedy Meeks will withdraw from the NBA draft and return for his senior season. In a statement, Meeks says it was “invaluable” to get feedback on improving his game.

Awarded Moose Jaw Warriors winger Dryden Hunt was named the Western Hockey League’s player of the year. Hunt, who led the WHL with 58 goals and 58 assists in 72 regular-season games, accepted the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy at the WHL awards ceremony in front of former NHLers Joe Sakic, Bobby Clarke and Lanny McDonald.

Departed NFL security chief Jeffrey Miller is leaving the league for the private sector. Miller, who has overseen numerous league investigations, will remain with the NFL through its May owners’ meetings and a training session.

Announced UCLA wide receiver Ishmael Adams pleaded no contest to battery after using force to rob a cellphone from an Uber driver in October, officials said. As part of a negotiated plea agreement, Adams was sentenced to 20 days of community labor, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and psychological counseling, according to Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney’s office.

Charged Authorities say former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and other crimes after being found in possession of guns and marijuana in suburban Detroit. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Appling was arrested Sunday outside a Dearborn strip club.

Settled Bowling Green State University in Ohio will pay $712,000 to former football player Cody Silk, who said the coaches and medical staff didn’t pull him from practice right away after he suffered multiple concussions that led to a permanent brain injury. Silk reported being wobbly and confused during training.

Agreed The WNBA and its players union have agreed to amend the collective bargaining agreement on fines for overseas play. According to emails obtained by The Associated Press, players will no longer be fined for missing time for overseas national team commitments if they notify their WNBA teams in advance.

Exempt Retiring South Korean great Se Ri Pak received an exemption from the U.S. Golf Association to play in the U.S. Women’s Open. The exemption is for the July 7-10 event at CordeValle in San Martin, California.
