One dead when motorcycle hits deer north of Springdale

One man died and a woman was injured Tuesday night when they hit a deer while driving a motorcycle north of Springdale.

Gary Hays, 66, of Kettle Falls, was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and pronounced dead around 11 p.m. Tuesday. His passenger, Janice Hays, 67, was taken to Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah where she was treated and released.

Gary Hays was driving the 2016 Harley Davidson north on state Highway 231 about six miles north of Springdale shortly after 8 p.m. Both Gary and Janice Hays were wearing helmets, a news release from the Washington State Patrol said.
