Area roundup: Gonzaga golfer Pagdanganan qualifies for NCAA tournament
Freshman Bianca Pagdanganan became the first Gonzaga golfer to clinch an NCAA tournament berth by tying for eighth place at the Bryan (Texas) Regional.
Pagdanganan, competing as an individual, was just a shot off the lead after Friday’s second round but finished with a 78 for a final total of 2-under 214.
Georgia’s Bailey Tardy and UCLA’s Bronte Law tied for first at 7 under. Georgia won the team title by six strokes.
The championships are May 21-25 at Eugene Country Club with Pagdanganan playing the first three days in stroke play before the final two days of match play to determine the team champ.
The Vandals’ top finisher was Sophie Hausmann, who tied for 42nd in the field of 96 golfers at 11 over.
Andrea Wong of UC Davis and Elizabeth Szokol of Virginia tied for first at 4 under.
Baseball
Washington State 4, Utah 3: The Cougars (15-25, 8-14 Pac-12) got only three hits but scored four unearned runs to beat the Utes (16-24, 11-8) in Pullman, dropping the Utah into second place behind Washington.
Starter Damon Jones (1-1) pitched five hitless innings to get the win. Trenton Dupre came into the ninth with one out and gave up an RBI ground out but then picked up his first save.
Ty Johnson collected two RBIs without the benefit of a hit.
Washington 7, USC 3: Chris Baker hit a pair of RBI triples, and Levi Jordan had an two-RBI, ground-rule double in a three-run sixth that put the Huskies (26-16, 12-8 Pac-12) ahead for good in their victory over the Trojans (22-22, 10-10) in Los Angeles.
CC Spokane 10-4, Blue Mountain 0-5: Kade Woods went seven innings and Brandon Desjardins the final two as the CC Spokane pair combined for an eight-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader split against Blue Mountain in Pendleton, Oregon.
Woods walked on and struck out six while Desjardins walked none and fanned two. Garrett Hull had three hits and four RBIs and Cory Meyer a solo homer for the Sasquatch (22-16, 11-13 NWAC).
In the second game, Blue Mountain (14-24, 8-16) had a 5-2 lead through seven innings and held on. Hull had two more hits for CCS while Meyer and Mitchell Cox hit solo homers.
Softball
North Idaho 9-6, Wenatchee Valley 3-2: Keku’ulani Haake slugged home runs in both games and finished with four hits and six RBIs to help the NWAC East Division-leading Cardinals (31-9, 24-4) sweep a doubleheader from the Knights (22-18, 18-8) in Coeur d’Alene.
The Cardinals scored a run in the fifth to take the lead and then added five more in the sixth in the first-game victory with Katie Barron getting the win with two innings of relief. Barron went the distance in the second game.
Chloe McIntosh finished with five hits, including a homer, while Lexi Courtney also homered for NIC.
CC Spokane 2-6, Yakima Valley 0-2: The Sasquatch (28-14, 19-9) swept a doubleheader from the Yaks (5-35, 3-25) at Spokane Falls CC.
Track and field
Washington State junior Liz Harper, competing in her second collegiate heptathlon, is in second place and Dino Dodig is in fourth in the decathlon at the Pac-12 Combined Events Championships at Husky Track in Seattle.
Harper has 3,495 points after four events, trailing defending champ Amalie Iuel, who has 3,709.
Dodig has 3,909 points and is 13 points out of third place. Arizona’s Pau Tonneson leads after the first five events with 4,025.
Soccer
Vancouver 3, Spokane 0: The Victory (2-0-0) blanked the Shadow (0-1-1) men at Spokane Falls CC. The last time the Shadow lost was May 16, 2015, also against Vancouver.
Spokane 9, Twin City Union 0: The Shadow (2-0-0) women rolled over the visitors (0-2-0) from Centralia/Chehalis at Spokane Falls CC. Tiara Pittman-scored three goals and Megan Lindsay added two.
