Prep roundup: CV defeats Ferris 3-0 to claim district boys soccer championship

Central Valley defeated Ferris 3-0 on Saturday at Spokane Falls CC to claim the District 8 4A boys soccer championship and the top seed to the regional tournament.

Lewis and Clark (14-3) beat Mead 3-1 in the other game, claiming the third seed to regionals and eliminating the Panthers (9-8).

LC will travel to play at Richland, the Mid-Columbia Conference’s No. 2 seed, on Tuesday in a loser-out game. That survivor will play at Central Valley (13-2), the Greater Spokane League champion, on Thursday Also Thursday, Ferris (10-4) travels to play Pasco, the Mid-Columbia champ after claiming its third straight district title with a 1-0 over the Bombers on Saturday.

In CV’s win, Nathan Grinalds scored six minutes in with an assist from RJ Stretch. Jake Levine made it 2-0 just a minute into the second half with Devin Hauenstein getting an assist. Chase Reidt added the capper with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Kendall Findley posted the shutout, making four saves.

Jackson Moore scored goals in the 39th and 69th, the first coming on a tap-in off a cross from Chandler Goff and the second on a 1-on-1 to overcome a goal from Mead’s Cole Johnson in the 30th. Bailey Rosenau added the Tigers’ final goal. Henry Smaldon and Adam Thompson also had assists for LC.

District 7 2A: Host East Valley eliminated Cheney 3-1 to advance to the title game at top-seeded Pullman.

EV and Pullman, which play Tuesday at 5 p.m., will also be vying for seeding to the Great Northern League-Central Washington Athletic Conference crossovers.

The second-seeded Knights got goals from Devonte Gorman, Chase Binder and Matt Spitze in overcoming a 1-0 deficit against the No. 4 Blackhawks (9-8). EV (12-4) had lost to Cheney in the district semifinals the three previous years.

Baseball

District 7 2A: Fourth-seeded Cheney beat No. 3 Pullman 7-3 and No. 5 East Valley blanked No. 2 West Valley 1-0 in loser-out games.

East Valley (6-10) will play host Cheney (9-12) on Monday at 4 p.m. in another loser-out game with the winner playing at top-seeded Clarkston for the district title and seeding to crossovers with CWAC teams.

At Pullman (7-13), Harrison King hit a three-run homer in the fifth to extend the Blackhawks’ lead. King finished with five RBIs and Trey Martin and Cade Van Wormer added two hits each.

At West Valley, Colin Spendlove tossed a three-hit shutout and drove in the only run. Spendlove singled in Riley Sines in the fifth inning. Johnny Sage also allowed just three hits and picked up two hits at the dish for WV (10-9).

Idaho 4A Region I: Nick Holland had three hits, Trey Flint two and Sandpoint scored six runs in the fifth to in taking an 11-6 victory over host Moscow.

Sandpoint advances to play at Lakeland on Tuesday at 3 p.m. with that winner clinching a state berth and loser going on to a play-in game.
