Kyle Odom appears in Idaho court on attempted murder charge

Odom (COURTESY OF KOOTENAI COUNTY JAIL)

Kyle Andrew Odom, the man accused of shooting Coeur d’Alene Pastor Tim Remington in March, appeared before a judge Monday on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

Odom, 30, who was arrested in Washington, D.C., and extradited to Kootenai County last week, told 1st District Magistrate Anna Eckhart he understood the charge. Wearing red–and-white striped prison clothing, Odom replied “No, ma’am” when Eckhart asked if he had any questions.

The judge continued Odom’s bond of $500,000. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and could be fined as much as $25,000. A preliminary hearing to establish whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence of the crime will be scheduled within 14 days. Odom is represented by the Kootenai County Public Defender’s office.

Remington, the pastor at The Altar Church, survived being shot six times with a .45-caliber handgun outside the church he started. He is recuperating at his home near Coeur d’Alene. Several members of the church attended Monday’s court hearing, at which Odom appeared via closed-circuit television from the county jail.

U.S. Secret Service agents arrested Odom outside the White House on March 8, two days after the shooting in Coeur d’Alene. He allegedly threw flash drives and other materials over the south fence of the president’s residence and was not armed.

Odom allegedly fled the scene of the shooting and drove through Spokane and then south to Boise, where he boarded a commercial flight to Washington, D.C., the morning after the shooting, according to investigators.

The March 8 arrest capped a multistate manhunt for a man police described as mentally ill and dangerous. The former Marine and University of Idaho graduate mailed letters and electronic documents to his parents and several media outlets in which he claimed Remington was a “Martian” and a member of “an ancient civilization from Mars.”
