‘Ban Islam’ fliers left at proposed mosque site on West Side

Associated Press

MUKILTEO, Wash. – “Ban Islam from America” fliers left at a proposed mosque site in northwest Washington are under investigation.

The Herald reported an anonymous tip led authorities to find an American flag Thursday near a damaged sign posted with the fliers.

The sign announced plans for the mosque.

Mukilteo police Officer Myron Travis said about a half-dozen paragraphs in the fliers contained “anti-Islamic rhetoric.”

Mosque president Mohammed Riaz Khan said he’s working with religious groups to schedule a meeting this month to answer the public’s questions.

People can submit comments on the mosque plans until May 20.

Mukilteo Mayor Jennifer Gregerson said her community values diversity. She called the damage hateful and unacceptable.
