Manhunt near Newport turns up one suspect in police chase

A man believed to be involved in a chase where shots were fired at a Bonner County Sheriff’s Deputy Tuesday has been arrested by the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven Gervasi, 25, was located in the area where the suspects car was abandoned in a field south of Newport around Spring Valley Road, Elmers Loop and Tweedie Road.

Gervasi is believed to be the driver of the abandoned car. The passenger, who was identified by the pursuing deputy as Patrick Geaudreau, 27, is the one who fired multiple shots at the deputy, said Capt. Ror Lakewold. He is still at large.

Gervasi and Geaudreau are known associates and Gervasi was found in the area, Lakewold said. His role in the chase is still under investigation, but he is facing a charge of making a false statement to a public servant.

Gervasi is currently in the Pend Oreille County Jail.
