Woman in serious condition after assault

A woman is in serious condition at a local hospital after she was reportedly hit in the head with a table leg on Tuesday.

Witnesses called police to an apartment building at 1712 W. Second Ave. Tuesday evening after the woman stumbled out of an apartment, said she had been attacked and then collapsed, according to court documents. The woman was unconscious when police and medics arrived.

John T. Ensminger, 46, was arrested on suspicion of first degree assault. Witnesses said they saw him come out of the apartment holding the table leg and reported to police that he said, “Anybody else want some of this?”

The woman’s boyfriend told police that she had been trying to collect some money that Ensminger owed her. Ensminger told police the woman had tried to attack him with a knife and that he was acting in self-defense, though he denied hitting her in the head with the table leg, court documents said.

Ensminger is being held in the Spokane County Jail on $100,000 bond.
