State hearings to focus on oil shipments by rail and pipeline

The Washington Department of Ecology will hold two public hearings Tuesday in Spokane to take comments on proposed rules for oil shipments by rail and pipeline.

A 1-5 p.m. hearing will focus on a proposed rule requiring railroads transporting crude and refined oil to submit spill response plans to the state for approval.

A 7 p.m. hearing involves reporting requirements for facilities that receive oil from railroads and pipelines. The proposed rule covers what information emergency responders, local governments and tribes could request from the state about shipments, and what would be publicly available.

Both hearings are at the Ramada Inn at Spokane International Airport, 8909 West Airport Drive.

Comments can also be submitted through June 10 to Kim.Morley@ecy.wa.gov or to Department of Ecology Spills Program, P.O. Box 47600, Olympia, WA 98504-7600.
