Expand aquatics programs in schools

Thank you, Ryan Foote, for writing about swimming as a sport in high school. I live in Spokane and travel once or twice a week to the Kroc Center to volunteer in the water polo program, which consists of high school kids from the Coeur d’Alene area and a masters program.

Yes, they have a high school water polo program in CdA and the team has won state. The Kroc even supports them to travel to the Seattle area to play. Spokane cannot even do a high school swimming team and we have a lot more aquatics facilities than they do. The water polo team is even coed in CdA.

So what gives? Is it just meat and potatoes sports available for kids? Is it that the districts do not care? Making it coed helps with Title IX requirements. Water polo and swimming go hand and hand.

Let’s get aquatics to become a high school sport. We have the facilities. Then maybe Coeur d’Alene and Spokane could play against each other and save me the 35 miles each way.
